The difference

What makes this trip.

The moments a fixed departure can't reach: private, named, and ours alone to arrange.

01

The best leopard odds anywhere

Yala's Block One, worked at dawn and dusk with a private tracker.

02

Cocoons above the dunes

Wild Coast Tented Lodge sits where the jungle meets the beach.

03

Elephants, swimming

Gal Oya's herds cross the lake between islands; you watch from a boat.

04

A safari by water

The only boat safari in Sri Lanka, on a lake with more eagles than engines.

05

The Vedda forest walk

Into the forest with the island's first people, reading it their way.

The journey

Leopard country

Yala holds one of the highest leopard densities on earth, and Gal Oya holds almost nobody at all: elephants that swim between islands, and a lake the size of a sea. Five nights, six days, two very different wilds, in camps that treat canvas as an architecture rather than a compromise.

Highlights
Met at Colombo, driven south
Cocoon suites above the beach
The first briefing at dusk

You are met at Colombo and driven south along the expressway and coast to the edge of Yala, where Wild Coast Tented Lodge sets its bamboo cocoons between the jungle and a wild beach. Elephants cross the property line when it suits them. Over dinner under the tent's great arch, your tracker lays out the park and the plan: leopards are never promised, but Block One at dawn is where the promise comes closest.

Block One, first light
Highlights
Dawn and dusk in Block One
Sloth bears, elephants, crocodiles
Middays back at the lodge

Two days worked properly: out before light with your private tracker, back for late breakfasts, out again for the golden hour. Yala's leopards have no lions to fear and behave accordingly, draped over rocks and strolling the tracks at an owner's pace. Between cats the park gives sloth bears, elephants at the waterholes, crocodiles the length of the jeep, and peacocks doing their absurd best everywhere. Middays belong to the pool and the sound of the ocean.

The lake from the ridge
Highlights
The road into the hills
A lodge with the lights off
The lake at evening

The road turns inland through rice country and climbs gently to Gal Oya, the park almost nobody visits, arranged around Sri Lanka's largest lake. The lodge keeps nine bungalows and no urgency; the evening is a walk to a viewpoint where the lake scatters its islands toward the hills, and dinner under more stars than the coast ever shows.

Elephants crossing between islands
A forest walk with the Vedda

Sri Lanka's only boat safari leaves at first light, drifting the lake's edges where elephants come down to drink and, with luck, swim trunk-up between the islands, which is one of Asia's least advertised great sights. Fish eagles work the water; the engine goes off more than it goes on. In the afternoon, a walk into the forest with a Vedda elder, the island's first people, who read the trees the way your tracker read the tracks.
