The difference

What makes this trip.

The moments a fixed departure can't reach: private, named, and ours alone to arrange.

01

A room from 1684

Amangalla has received travellers inside the fort walls for three centuries.

02

The cliff at Weligama

Cape Weligama stands on its own headland, the ocean on three sides.

03

Whales, in season

Blue whales pass this coast between December and April; a private boat goes out at dawn.

04

The stilt fishermen

Koggala's fishermen at first light, balanced above the surf as their fathers were.

05

Nothing, scheduled

Most afternoons hold no plan at all, which is the point of the coast.

The journey

The southern coast, slowly

A week built around one coastline: two nights inside Galle's Dutch walls, then four above the ocean at Weligama, with nothing between you and the horizon but frangipani and a pool. Six nights, seven days, and a schedule kept deliberately almost empty. The south coast rewards people who stop trying.

The expressway south
Amangalla's long verandah
The ramparts before dinner

The southern expressway brings you from the airport to Galle in under three hours, and the fort does the rest: seventeenth-century walls, gabled streets, and Amangalla's long verandah waiting with tea. The evening asks only one thing, the ramparts at sunset, where the whole fort turns out to watch the Indian Ocean perform.

Highlights
The lanes on foot
Gem merchants and lace makers
Lunch under the fans

The fort is a quarter of a square kilometre and inexhaustible anyway. A morning on foot with your guide: the Dutch church with its gravestone floor, the lighthouse corner, gem merchants who will happily lose an hour to a single sapphire, a lace maker working in her doorway. The afternoon is yours, which in Galle means a long lunch, a slow bookshop, and the pool in the garden.

The pace bottoms out

Half an hour along the coast, and the journey reaches its real destination: Cape Weligama, on its own headland with the ocean on three sides. The villas sit among frangipani above the cliff; the crescent pool hangs over the sea. The afternoon establishes the routine for the days ahead, which is to say it abolishes routine altogether.

The stilt fishermen at Koggala
Ayurveda above the cliff

Two days shaped entirely by appetite. In season, a private boat goes out at dawn for the blue whales that pass this coast, the largest animals that have ever lived, seen from a respectful distance. The stilt fishermen of Koggala balance above the surf at first light for those who prefer the shore. Otherwise: the spa, the cliff path, a curry lunch that outlasts the afternoon, and the sea doing its work below.

The ocean, uninterrupted

Kept empty to the end. Perhaps the boat again, perhaps the pool, perhaps nothing that could be written down. The last dinner is at a single table set on the cliff edge, the horizon doing the decorating.
