A private journey, through the unhurried south

Vietnam

Saigon · The Mekong Delta · Con Dao

Eight nights · Nine days

What makes this trip.

The moments a fixed departure can't reach: private, named, and ours alone to arrange.

01

Saigon at street level

The colonial core and the alley food, with a guide who remembers three versions of the city.

02

The floating market at dawn

Cai Rang from a private boat, wholesale by sampan as the sun comes up.

03

A lodge on the delta

Azerai Can Tho, on its own islet, reached only by boat.

04

Con Dao's empty bays

An island of forests and protected reefs, with one great house on it.

05

Turtles, in season

Green turtles nest on Con Dao's beaches; rangers take small groups at night.

The south, unhurried

The south runs on water: a city built on a river, a delta that is more canal than land, and an island so far offshore it kept its forests and its silence.

Eight nights, nine days, decelerating by stages from Saigon's energy to four nights at Con Dao where the schedule finally dissolves.

Met at the gate
The colonial core on foot
Alley food after dark

Two nights in District 1 to take the city at street level: the Post Office and the Opera House, lacquer and propaganda-poster ateliers, and after dark the alleys, where the best kitchens in the city seat six people at a time. Your guide grew up here and remembers the city in three historical registers; the walking is really listening.

The road south
An islet lodge by boat
The river at evening

The drive south crosses into a country made of water, and the arrival makes the point: Azerai sits on its own islet in the Hau River, reached by the lodge's boat. The afternoon is a bicycle turn through the orchards and lanes of the islet, and the evening is the river traffic sliding past the lawn, barges low with rice and fruit.

Highlights
Cai Rang before sunrise

A noodle workshop and a garden lunch

Out before sunrise by private boat to Cai Rang, the delta's great floating market, where each vessel advertises its cargo by hoisting it on a pole: pineapples, taro, watermelons by the tonne, coffee sellers weaving between hulls. Breakfast is noodle soup ladled boat to boat. On the way back, a rice noodle workshop and lunch in a garden house. The afternoon belongs to the pool and the river.

Highlights
The short hop offshore
Villas on their own bay
The pace dissolves

A short flight puts you on Con Dao, an archipelago far enough offshore that history mostly left it alone and the forests come down to the beaches. The villas stand on their own bay with the jungle behind. The only decision left in the day is whether the pool beats the sea, and it is not a decision that needs defending either way.

Turtles, in season

Two days written in pencil. A boat can take you around the archipelago's empty bays and the marine park's reefs; the island's history, a penal colony the Vietnamese treat as sacred ground, is told quietly and well in town for those who want the fuller picture. In season, rangers take small groups to watch green turtles nest after dark, one of the sea's oldest rituals. Otherwise: the bay, the spa, the forest walk to the next beach along.

Kept empty to the end. The last evening is a barbecue on the sand as the light goes, the forest loud behind and the sea doing its slow work in front. The south's whole argument, energy to silence, completed.

Is this trip for you?

What’s great

It decelerates by stages: the city, the delta, then four island nights where the schedule dissolves.

Cai Rang's floating market at dawn, from a private boat.

Azerai Can Tho on its own islet, reached only by water.

Con Dao at the end: forests, protected reefs, and one great house.

Things to consider

Delta mornings start at dawn, because that is when the market happens.

Con Dao sits far offshore; the flight out is short and small, and packing light makes it easy.

Four island nights with little to do is the point. Bring books.

Turtles nest in season and rangers decide the night; nature keeps its own diary.
